Things are happening faster than you might think

Now that your baby is an embryo, nestled in the walls of your uterus, things really start to get interesting. Both baby and placenta are growing quickly and by the end of week five your baby’s heart, the size of a poppy seed, will be already beating and the umbilical cord will have started to work.

The embryo has three layers of cells now and over the course of this week each starts to develop into completely different parts of your baby. The top layer develops into the neural tube, from which will grow the spinal chord, brain and nervous system. The middle layer provides the heart and the circulatory system and the bottom layer forms organs such as the lungs and the digestive and urinary systems.

What’s happening with mum?
If you’re not sure whether you’re pregnant or not, a home pregnancy test this week should give you the answer. While you may get a false negative test, a false positive is very unlikely. If you haven’t already, than now is the time to think about making an appointment with your doctor to start your antenatal care and to make sure that you are taking the right supplements and precautions for a healthy start for your pregnancy.

It’s in this second month that you’re more likely to start experiencing physical symptoms of pregnancy and you may feel nauseous, and not necessarily just in the morning! Making a baby is tiring work, and throughout the next few weeks its normal to feel very tired. You may also be experiencing mixed emotions about your pregnancy, swinging between euphoria and the blues and perhaps find yourself feeling a bit weepy.
