Before any child can speak, they can learn simple signs to tell you their tummy hurts, they're hungry, they need a new nappy! It can be used
from the early months right up to when they begin to speak (between their first and second birthdays, usually) and you may well find that
when their speaking does begin, they quickly have a wider vocabulary than other children because they have already learnt the value of
'speaking' and being understood.
