Work commitments and the stress of being pregnant have made it hard for Stacey to quit smoking
Mum-to-be Stacey Solomon has been caught smoking just two months before her due date.
The X Factor finalist, who is 7 months pregnant, was seen smoking four cigarettes in two hours during a photoshoot in South London.
Smoking in pregnancy has been linked to psychiatric problems and criminal behaviour in later life, sleeping problems in babies and can also cause serious complications in pregnancy, raising the risks of pre-eclampsia.
Mum-of-one Stacey claims her doctor told her it was OK to smoke, and quitting altogether would be “more stressful” on her body.
“I know it doesn’t look good,” she tells The People newspaper. “But I only have a few cigs a day.”
Although Stacey admits to smoking, she has expressed a desire to quit in the future.
“Stacey has been smoking one or two cigarettes a day but she is desperately trying to quit and she is very embarrassed about it all,” her publicist Max Clifford explains.
The I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! winner has admitted to being fed up during her second pregnancy and work commitments haven’t helped.
“She’s going to be trying electronic cigarettes and she knows it’s bad, but the stress of a having a baby and all her work commitments have been difficult,” Max continues.
After facing a tirade of criticism, Stacey took to Twitter to explain her actions:
"I am really ashamed and embarrassed that I have been smoking during my pregnancy. It is something that I am deeply upset about and not proud of in any way.
"I feel that I have let people down who have given me fantastic opportunities and believed in me but most of all I feel I have let myself down and my family, that I care about most in the whole world. However I feel that I am a strong person and I am doing everything in my power to give up and have been for a long while.
"I will succeed and I will give up as I care more about my children than anything and everything. Thank you to everyone for your on going support and loving me for me. My flaws and all. Love you all lots xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
Stacey has now been removed from the Foxy Bingo Mum of the Year 2012 shortlist, leaving Katie Price, Amanda Holden and Natasha Giggs in the running.
