mucous in nappies

My 13 month old son for the last couple of weeks has had very loose stools, just this week i have noticed a few of his nappies have conained mucous, and smell dreafull.

i was wondering if its got anything do do with introducing dairy? i have been giving him his usual 2 bottles of formula, but giving him cows milk to drink inbetween like most weaning guides tell you to, since thursday i have stopped dairy altogehter to see if it improves.

he  doesnt appear to be in any pain but the loose poops cant be doing him any good and im worried about him dehydrating.

just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. im going to take him to the doctors this week but im really worried about him

Hi Kathy

Emma used to have mucous in her nappy if she was teething or sometimes if she was coming down with a cold as babies aren't very good at coughing it up!! I think if you're worried then speak to your health visitor or doctor. As long as he's active and happy i wouldn,t worry too much, just make sure he drinks plenty of water/ juice.

Hope this has been of some help?

Hi, for the past two days my son Isaac has been the same, his nappies smell dreadfull and are very watery and contain mucous. I have just started weening and was wondering if it had anything to do with it. He is lactose intolerent so can't have any dairy, so on my hv advice I have given hin fruit and veg. Do you think this could be the problem?.

hi rebecca

i have took harry off dairy altogether this week and its made a big difference to his nappies, then just as a n experiment i gave him a hipp organic choc pud and the same thing happened today, back to the mucous and watery diareahh. i have come to the conclusion he isnt intollerant, as the hv said this would have emerged when i was breast feeding, because i drank cows milk too. i had real trouble in asda trying to find food with no milk. the hv said to start to try him with tiny bits and if it  still persists, then cut it out altogether, but as your baby is already confirmed intollerant, it might be just a reaction to the weaning, when harry was first weaned, this happened  to him too.  its horrible when theres stuff wrong with our kids and they cant tell us whats wrong.

i hope it clears up for your little one soon. xxxx

Hi, we took Isaac to the doctors this morning as he woke up 7 times last night and has only took about 15oz of milk in the past 24 hours. The diarreoh is getting worse and he kept crying in pain. The doctor said he has a bug and is mildly dehydrated. We have to keep pushing fluids today and keep a close eye on him incase he becomes more dehydrated.
I'm off to have a sleep now as Isaac is fast asleep and he kept me up all night.

hi rebecca

poor little mite, thats what harry was like, and i knew as soon a si saw his nappies he must have had shocking stomache ache. because harrys nappys have suddenly improved im not sure if that was down to a bug or the milk  so im going to give him tiny bits mixed with food and see if it persists.

have a good rest hun, i know they say sleep when the baby does but thats sometimes easier said then done!

i really struggled trying to rehydrate harry, he was never inrersted in water, but loved fresh orange but as you prob know that has a laxative effect and thats what we were trying to stop! i ended up giving him small pieces of very ripe watermelon to coax some water into him! he never once got a thirst on though, which i thought he would have done with so much loose poop!  im keeping him on the formula until i have got to the bottom of the milk issue, just becasue i know its got plenty of nutrients i want to put back in that he was losing with the diareaoah (sorry i cant spell that word)

i hope your little man perks up soon, and keep the calpol flowing hun if it eases his tummy pain. gripe waters supposed to help too. xxxx
