Hi,

I am a full time mum to my 3 year old and 20 month old.  I am so bored of the same thing every single day and I've decided I want to work part time so I have something for myself and we need the money which also gets me down.

The reason I am writing is I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice on going back out to work after 3 and a half years.  It scares me so much and I haven't even got a job yet.  I haven't a clue where to start looking.  I am only able to work certain hours and days so it limits me. Am I just making excuses? who knows?

Anyway I am desperate to get myself out of this slump so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

hi Lorraine

what did you do before? i suppose it depends what you are interested in to be honest, alot of jobs can be quiet flexible now and offer child friendly hrs... suppose your best bet would be to talk to your local job centre as to what is available.... you might even be able to train for a career whilst stil getting paid to do so! worth a thought. otherwise what about a bar or resteraunt? as they have all sorts of strange hours.

it is possible to go back to work after a long period (although can be a daunting task..its worth it).. i had 3 children when i went back to college and then university to gain a career... and its best thing i done, dont get me wrong it was hard at first but worth it in the end!

if you dont want to go to that extreem.... why dont you look at chaning your routine, as maybe your just as you say fed up with the same olld same old things...join some mother and baby groups... sure start is supposed to be good and think they can offer help with returning to work!

hope i've helped a bit...feel free to message me if you need to chat

Hi lisa,

Thanks for the advice.  It is a really scary thought going back out to work.  I need to go back to work because we need the money.  I was a qualified nursery nurse before I had the kids but the thought of leaving my own children to look after someone elses just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Is that bad?  I would love to do some more training to further my career but it just isn't possible at the mo.  I even tried childminding but its far too much work for what money you make and plus I don't think I have the patience to have other kids in my house.  It was quite hard to get used to the last time.  I take my hat off to childminders it certainly isn't an easy job!  It is a massive amount of paper work and inspections.

I was just going try Asda or something as I worked there when I was about 18 but the thought of being out in public working frightens me slightly.  I am frightened I can't do it.  Does that sound silly?  I am on the jobcentre website every night looking for new jobs but never anything that suits my hours I can work.  I think I would like to work in an office....clerical or something like that.  I did secretarial studies at school and got a B but again its the whole new thing that puts me off.  I might look into doing something like that once both kids are at school but until then I think it has to be evening shifts somewhere.

Anyway enough of my moaning - what did you train as and are you working at the minute? x

hi lorraine... dont apologise...thats what people are here for...to listen and your not moaning anyway just expressing how your feeling

I trained as a mental health nurse...i work as a community mental health nurse now...which suits me as i work full time but in 3 and half days.... im currently on mat leave as have my baby in 4 wks... dreading going back tho.. but thats not til march so trying not to think of it ha ha but for me its about leaving the baby,,,,, not working as i really do enjoy my job

i no what you mean about getting out there it can be scary, especially when you been full time mum but once you do u wont look back... i wouldn't feel bad about it, sometimes i think mums need a bit of time away from their kids... adult time plus on a positive note...i think it makes you appreciate your kids more and vice versa!

as i've said before....feel free to personal message me, if you want to talk! never know it might help

take care lis x
