Forum Updates - Help Guide

Hello to all you lovely Mum's,

I'm sorry to drop in on your thread but am in need of info.....

Did any of you suffer from depression while pregnant? If so did you have any kind of help?

I have suffered depression for many years, i'm 23 weeks pregnant and took myself off medication when I first found out i was expecting, unfortunately i am suffering quite severely lately, but not sure about starting my medication again or not, i have read various reports about the pro's and cons of antedepressants but need to know how others coped and if medication was an option...was your baby's health o.k after your birth?

Thanks in advance of any help you can give me,

Love & best wishes to you and yours,

Rach xxx

I'm sorry to hear that you are suffering so badly. I suffer from depression and generalized anxiety disorder and am currently TTC. I have heard from American websites that the SSRI and SNRI antidepressants in pregnancy can have devastating outcomes for the baby. These ones being Prozac, Efexor, Celexa and Zoloft to name but a few, however the older antidepressants like amytriptyline appear to be somewhat safer. That is what my psychiatrist wants me to take instead of Efexor. I'm reluctant because it can give you a larger appetite and lead to weight gain. On the plus side though it can help you to sleep. I hope that I have helped in some way, please don't suffer on that can be bad for both you and your baby too. Best of luck xxx

Hi Nappynead!

I struggled through till 5 weeks ago still without my medication but finally my G.P put me back on them saying my baby development was just about complete and would be safe, my consultant did actually advice my G.P as i was in a bit of a mess.  I'm doing well and my baby is due very soon, just hoping all will be ok for her, i did give it a lot of thought and feel guilty taking the meds but I can see light at the end of the tunnel now and looking forward to meeting my baby

Good Luck to you too, Best Wishes

Rach xx

Hey Rach,

I dont know if you're still looking for advice but anyway i've had depression for several years (im fine on medication though) so was a bit worried about bein pregnant, but anyway cut down to 1 every other day before i concieved, prozac (fluoxetine is pharamacy name) safest anti depress in preg and my doc assure me should be fine in preg. I have had the odd week when i've struggled during preg but with all these hormones its not surprising is it! Anyway prozac not meant to be safest for breastfeeding, so always intended to swap to a diff one once given birth, but went to discuss with GP the other week and she advised at such a low dose should be fine and dont advise anyone to swap at traumatic or stressful periods of time. Doc said i could go onto the other anti depress if i wanted to it was up to me but may find moods v v up and down and feeling really emotional (which after giving birth i suspect is enough of a prob in itself without having depression).

So hope this helps hon, and if you have any info to share with me, i'd be more than grateful!!

xxx

ps hope you're feeling better

x
