Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help with a little problem that I am having with my 6 and a half month old baby boy, Jack.

I started weaning him at 4 months because he was drinking 5 x 9oz bottles of formula milk a day and was still hungry.  I asked the HV if it would be wise to start weaning and she agreed.

Everything has been fine until about a month ago, when he really started liking his solids (it took him a while to adapt to the different tastes and textures).  The last time I got him weighed at 6 months, the HV said that he was underweight (compared to the average boy at this age) and asked what I was feeding him and when.  I told her that I feed him 1/2 a jar of the HiPP Organic range or half of the jar's of the Cow & Gate range (the smaller pots), 3 times a day and I said that his milk takings vary as he is not interested in the milk anymore.  She never said anything about this, but to be honest, I'm not even sure if she heard me.

She advised me to up him solids to a full jar 3 times a day (morning, dinner and tea) and also start him on the Petits Filous stuff and also give him half a rusk every now and again.  I have started doing this and I am pretty sure he is putting weight on, so that's good.

The thing that I am concerned with is the fact that since upping his solids intake and giving his the rusks and Petits Filous, that he is becoming increasingly uninterested in his milk.  I try to give him 4 x 8oz during the day, but he will only take about 3 ounces at a time.  This is starting to really worry me because it's supposed to be the main part of his diet to have formula milk (am I right?)

Also, just recently he has been playing with the teat on the bottle and bites it with his gums and has found that when he does this, he flicks drops of milk all over me, which he finds extremely funny! The little monkey!!

So, what can I do to help him start accepting milk again?  Without reducing his weight or preventing his weight to be put on?

Please help!

Thanks so much,

Hazel xx

Hi Hazel - my friends little boy stopped drinking milk altogether when she put him on solids, she just made sure he had his dairy in other forms, ie peti-filous, cauliflour cheese etc, dont beat yourself up about it - its fine honestly, my youngest little girl has days when she will drink loads but others when she will just about have enough, if you are really worried about him having milk, then usually about 1 pint aday is good, so he DOESNT have to have 4 8oz bottles!! my tiddler is 8 months old and has 3 meals aday - jar (or equivalent) for each meal and shes just getting to the stage of wanting a little more so i think it will be a pud after her dinner in the evening, then she has 3 - 6 or 7 oz bottles with her meals and an 8oz to go to bed on.  Hope his has helped you. xx

hi there.

im going through the same with my 6 and a half month old little girl.

she has been on solids for about 10 weeks and has 3 meals a day. she was also drinkin 4 7oz bottles a day. it then started to drop and i got to two 7oz and a 4 oz.

again it has dropped to 6oz in the mornin, then breakfast  a 4 oz at 1pm then nothin at bedtime.

after speaking to my hv yesterday she advised to give dairy products such as yoghurt cos it contains like 2 ounces of milk, foods containing cheese  and if you cook at home use full fat milk or formula n your cooking so he is still getting the milk in some form.

hope this helps.

Hi Hazel.

Dont worry, dont think there is anything wrong. When a baby gets established on solids they will lose interest in milk. When they are having 3 proper solid meals a baby will only need about one pint of formula throughout the day. Try offering water with each meal to keep his fluids topped up.

Em x

I have just answered a similar post titled milk feeds....my answer was this...

This is quiet an intersting one as I too have been having the same problem... lo has been very uninterested in her milk and is now down to 1 or 2 bottles a day and not even big bottles she will take between 6 and 8 ounzes around 430am and then thats it, maybe 4 ounzes b4 bed at 7pm... I mentioned this to the HV and she said some babies do loose interest in milk and to just fill them up on foods.... my HV suggest that I just feed lo until she is full and saying no to it.... today for tea I gave her a jar of sweet potato and beef pie and a jar of apple and blueberry puree and she ate the lot!! she is 20 weeks tomorrow and she has been on solids since 14 weeks

I have tried the adding milk thing even tried to make rusk for brekki with formula but it didnt work.. so have to accept that she just isnt a milky baby....

I think really its just trial and error.. what may begood for one isnt good for another and vise versa
