Hi, does anyone out there have any tips on how I can encourage my 7 month old son to drink water?  At the moment he will only drink follow on milk or juice from his bottle or off a spoon.  Also, any tips on getting him to drink out of a spouted cup as he doesn't want to that either?

Thanks...

Hi there,

I got the winnie the pooh spouted cup in mothercare and Emma took a while to take to it. She now is taking the water fine. I would offer her the cup if she was eating something and it did take a while before she started to pick it up herself and learn to hold it up high to get the water out. I place it next to her when she eats and she picks it up when she needs it. I haven't given her fruit juice cause I read that all a baby needs is its bottled milk and water. If you want your boy to take water you may have to think about leaving out fruit juice for a while as it does take babies a while to get used to the taste of water. My daughter really likes it now so hope that you will have success.sx

Hey, maybe try putting a tiny ammount of fruit juice in the water to start with so it has a bit of flavour?? I don't have much advice as my son is only 11weeks!!! x x

Thanks for the tips. I am trying to give him gradually more dilute juice, with a view to eventually just giving him water as I know it's better for their teeth. Will keep trying with the cup...

Hi Angela,

I would go with the idea of gradually making the juice more diluted.

It may also help to try a few cups out - I bought the basic tommee tippee cup (the one from 4 months) and although my son would drink from it he never drank very much water and most of it he would spit out again, I had also bought the non-spill cup (from 6/7months) and for a few months he wouldn't take any water from it at all so I gave up! A month or so ago I tried him with the non-spill cup again and he now drinks and drinks from it - I think it's because he can control the rate at which the water comes out. I also have some doidy cups which I love but again most of it is spat out again because I don't think he likes having too much liquid in his mouth!

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice, I'll just keep persevering...

I cannot tell you how much money i spent looking for a cup Lucie would drink from, and typically it was a cheap £2 one from mothercare! once he's got a cup he likes and as long as you perservere with giving him water then he'll grow to like it. If he's thirsty he'll drink it!
HI my baby hates any kind of non spill cup  as gets frustrated however he chokes on the non spill ones. I have found giving sips form a adult beaker or doidy cup good- they cant do it them sleves at this stage ( my baby is 7 mths) but you controll flow . takes patience and willingness to chane clothes - not always so prcatical when out.! he will just chew on the non spill as perhaps my baby is  too young.x

Maybe I'll try sips from a normal cup then, he always seems very interested in any cup me or his Dad are drinking out of...
