Hi.

Gill. wouldnt recommend using jars. If youve got a v hungry baby, they will get more substance from homemade food, and if he's like my baby he wont like jars anyway. Most savoury jars are mainly carrots (or water!!), whatever dish they are supposed to be. Just cook up some veg and blend it, and when bubs is used to food you can start adding meats or fish to the mix.

ok thnx so say i do start him on jars now he wont get ill or it wont hurt him in any way wud it coz im new at all this and im scared stiff lol

hi gill thi is all new to me too but from what i have heard , like Emma said, homemade food (simple veg and fruite purees) is best, fresh, cheaper and you knjow what in it! Also i heard that if you introduce them to the jars then they will not like fruit and veg later in life and will be used to bland tates and smooth consisterncies. They are great i would imagine on the move  ( an im sure i will be using them for times likt this) but i see them as the equivalent of junk food should be used occasionaly. I am no heakth food freak myself lol. see how the purees go- if you have limited time etc you can make a batch and freeze.

The mums on the Jan thread suggest simple purees like carrot, pumpkin, butternut squash, then stewed pears, apples etc .You can start of pureeing them to a smooth consistency then as the weeks go on make it lumpier. You can either steam or boil then chuck it in the belnder or mash it up and seive it to a satiffactory consistency.

My baby is on baby rice since about 3 weeks now as he has an intolerance so have been to scared to try the purees!

thnx for yr advice ill try them and see how they go im just scared to try sumat different than milk haha
gill have you tried baby rice mixed with formula/breas milk to start with? never put in the bottle tho ( this is info passed on by hv's not me preaching lol) i think this is common sence as the baby can choke and the whole point of weaning is to get them used to eating off  spoon then eventually joining in family means . ask your hv about a weaning course or some info. I found mine to be very good with info alhtough they made me feel so guilty about intrducting baby rice at 16 weeks!

ill try that 2day then ive fed him 3 times in the past hour 2day and he wont stop cryin i think he mite be teethin coz its a bit bumpy on the bottom but im not sure

Hi again.

Could be teething, but even if it feels lumpy it could still be a while before they actually come through. If he wont stop crying, try a small dose of calpol or rub a bit of teething gel on gums.

Hi all

Gosh you have been busy today lol

I prefer to give my babies home made purees too as i know what is in them. The jars are great for the odd occasion when you dont have anything made or ou g oout but they are full of preservatives and natural or not i personally prefer home cooked stuff.

I think when you do it is a personal choice too. Pureed veg and fruit is as soft as baby rice and if the baby has allergies to milk you can make thse without milk! (Most jars and packet mixes have milk in them!) Some people say you can start with pureed foods and skip the baby rice altogether but i am not so sure i would do this. All my babies have started on rice and progressed from there.

Eva well dont for pressing for the tests. I would see another doctor and demand some dairy free milk if he is intolerant or it could affect his spleen and hence his immune system. (I only know this because of my first two babies and of course my holistic training!) They say not to give soya to babies under 1 year now (That has changed in the last 4 years) but not many Gp's knwo that. Your HV should as should a dietician. Tell  your GP you want to be referred. You have to be realy pushy with this as the hospitals are so lax about dairy intolerances. But point out to them that no other animal drinks another animals milk as a rule so it stands to reason that some people can't handle it. If you get him off the dairy now he should have grown out of it by the time he is 2 or 3 if you keep him on it he will be much older when he grows out of it or he may not.

Alot depends on the severity of the intolerance so i am not trying to scare you but i have been through it....i know how hard it is! On the baby rice stuff, i think you were doing fine before your HV stuck her oar in. Do what feels right for Theo. if he doesnt like it, doesnt want it, or isnt ready he will tell you himself, but you wont know if you dont try!

Love ya P xxxx

try rubbing an ice cube along his gums (semi melted first) or put a tea spoon in the fridge and let him chomp on that. Bicky pegs are great too (Tesco/boots) as is mediced for children. Hope that all helps x

hello p2baby, long time no speak hope all is ok with you... Ioften ask about you on spd thread....

i personally think all HV are ment to say no to weaning cause of the guidelines... PHoebe will be 17 weeks old tomorrow and I had her weighed on Friday, I told the HV that I had started weaning her and she had been on solids for 2 weeks and she loves it... the HV was happy with that and said as long as she was happy and her poos were fine then ther wouldnt be a problem with it especially as I started my other 2 by 3 months and they are fine now... she even gave me some freebie hipp organic jars to try, she is ment to throw them away as she cant bee seen to recommend anything but she said the same as me... you cant throw away perfectly good jars of food... I have used them with Phoebe.. I started her on rice but she werent keen on that and kept spitting it out so tried some creamy porridge and she loved it.. I tired her on a couple of packet stuff... then cause I had these free jars I tried her on one and since then she wont take packet stuff... so I will be buying my blender this week so I can give her home made stuff, apart from porridge as she loves that so much and dont know what else I can give her home made wise as a cereal

Hi Looby.

Jack has been on solids since he was 10 or 11 weeks, Daft thing is he hates being spoon fed lol He eats anything I make him, plus petit filous and he loves pureed fruit.  He will eat hipp organic jars but he isn't fussed at all on the other jars. He is 27 weeks now and he is eating toast fingers, bread sticks and pink wafers lol.

Really Pheobe is a little young for most cereals and the baby cereals are sooooo expensive but i find mixing pureed fruit, yoghurt or custard to the porridge makes it more interesting for Jack. Try making her pureed fruit blended with pure baby rice as a change. Jack loves that xx
