Hi Girls.

I have just read through my notes from the hospital and saw that my babys head is 4/5 engaged????

I am 34+3 @ the min....and I dont understand what this all means? Does any1 have any sort of clue when labour will start..or how long i might have to go???

hiya emma,

it is charted at free,4/5,3/5,2/5,1/5 then engaged,so your baby is getting itself in place for delivery, but it can take some weeks to be fully engaged.

hope this helps and good luck with your birth.

nikki - my notes have always read the other way round LOL 4/5th engaged is almost there with my notes!! i guess it depends on who you are under for healthcare!! LOL but anyway emma - it just means the baby's head has decended ready for labour! good luck! xxx

as i understand it is:

4/5th is almost engaged!! so the head is getting into position and will be ready for the delivery. only 1/5th to go qand you will be ready to give birth!! ok so can still be a few weeks so try not to worry too much em but looking good hon xxx at least thats how my m/w explained it last time xxx

In our area it means 1/5 of the head can't be felt and has decended into the pelvis.

4/5ths could be the start of the baby moving south but it could be many weeks before anything else happens. I have also been told that with first babies they can bob up and down for a bit so it could become free again. Dont worry too much. Just check with your MW what it means for you next time you see them.

hey emma funny you should ask that question i just asked my midwife yesterday what that meant because im 4/5 head down and the m/w said that baby is just starting to engage when you get to 1/5 then your fully engaged but it also dependes on if its your first baby or not because 1st babys can take weeks to get to that stage were as im on baby number4 m/w says the only time she exspects me to move from 4/5 and go to 3/5 is when im in labour so where as i could go in labour at any time for first time mums it could be weeks. hope that helps love

Hi ya, I have had my baby but thought I would join in, I agree with Katie and Cyntha, when I had my baby, 4/5 engaged means it has just started to engage, 1/5 is fully engaged. I however was only ever 4/5 engaged until I literally went into labour, so hang in there, other people drop more gradually xx
