My 14 month old daughter is still sleeping with us and I have no idea how to get her into her own cot before her sister arrives in December. Does anyone have any ideas/advice/experience? I am really in a pinch! Thank you.

hi KG

the best think you can do is put her in her own bed each night and persevere with the tears and tantrums that are bound to come. If you establish a story around bedtime and have a consistent routine, it should not take too long to get her used to her own room. What I mean by story is to make your daughter the main character and explain to her that she is now such a big girl exactly what you are going to do,,, ie

tonight we are going to sleep in your big bed because you are such a big girl, but first we will have a nice dinner/bath/playtime/story etc to fit around your normal nightime routine.

it will take time since she has been used to being with you all the time so far in her life but eventually she will come to terms with the situation.

good luck

HI,
Its going to be really hard, i agree with suzie. Put her to bed as usual (but in her own) if she cries leave her for 5 minutes, go back in and settle her back down, keep doing it every 5 minutes until she eventually knackers herself out. If she is walking it might be best to put her into a bed with a safety side on, then in a few months time you can put her in a larger bed and put your baby in the cot. we did this it saved us buying another cot. Plus abbey was put into a bed as soon as she could walk, that way we thought she would be used to a bed before baby no2 arrived, and you wont have to teach your little one into getting used to a cot, then in a few months time a bed. The only difference is the fact they can get out of bed and come to you. Abbey still takes about 20 minutes to settle down at night but as soon as she opens her door she is put back into bed and all we say is its bed time now abbey, give her another kiss, her beaker of milk and lie her down again until she goes to sleep.

We also have same problem, even more since Dan is still sucking. Guess we'll just have to agree withSuzie.

Our 22 month old is the same. She has started to go down in her cot in the last

few days but still joins us in the early hours. We all share the same room so it can be difficult to ignore the crying. She is still feeding also. We use books and toys in the cot and a cd if the voice cracks with nursery rhymes. Good luck it is tough but she adapted to this attempt better than I thought. The magic word is cuddle down when she sits up. The idea of straight to a big girl bed is good, we got one from Freecycle for when its time for her to come out of the cot.
