Hi everyone,

I have had irregular periods for 9 months now and am usually on a period every other week, but this changed when I missed my period in December. It is now 10 weeks since I had a period.

I had many tests at the doctors including blood tests checking hormones, signs of being anemic, ultrasound for fibroids and an internal scan also. All these tests brought nothing back and so I was told I simply had irregular periods.

When I was two days late for my December period I took a test and it was negative. A week later the doctors took another and this was also negative. I was told if I didn't start my period within two weeks of this test that I was to return to the doctors and provide another urine sample. I did this, and at this point it was 7 weeks since my last period, but this also came back negative.

I'm afraid I may have been very naive on the situation. Once my period was late (i.e. throughout Christmas and New Year) my partner and I assumed it wasn't possible to conceive, as we presumed I couldn't have been ovulating, and as a result had unprotected sex once my period was late. Could I have conceived in this time?

The reason I ask is that 5 days ago I thought my period had started as I wiped myself after visiting the toilet and there were very light pink spots on the paper. I presumed my period was starting, but this very, very light spotting continued for a further two days and now appears to have stopped. I am told spotting is an early pregnancy sign.

I apologise this is so lengthy... I have booked another doctors appointment but would really appreciate any thoughts in the meantime as I am going crazy! Being pregnant wouldn't be a terrible thing by any means, I am sure my partner and I would both be thrilled... but what with not knowing IF I could have conceived when I had no period throughout the festive season, I actually wouldn't know how far gone I am!!!!

I hope this makes sense.

Any ideas/thoughts welcome and greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

I would invest in a few pregnancy tests...remember to take the test 1st thing in the morning as the pregnancy hormone hcg is at its highest in the morning...it also doubles everyday in early pregnancy so if a test is -ve one day it could be +ve the next day or day after!

I was trying to conceive a few months back and was taking, on average, 2 tests a month. A way i found to keep the costs down and to delay taking a test was to buy them off ebay as the postage takes at least a day or 2. Type in; ULTRA EARLY PREGNANCY MIDSTREAM TEST/TESTS CE MARKED and you find some really good pregnancy tests.

A friend of mine doesnt have periods at all unless she is on the pill (wierd i know but even the doctor and hospital couldnt explain why). Anyway, within 5 months of ttc she fell pregnant and is now 4 months pregnant...so it is posible to concieve when you do not have periods.

As for your irregular periods are you stressed? Put on a lot of weight? Lost a lot of weight? Depressed? As these are just some reasons that your periods may stop...altho im sure your gp has looked in2 most things.

Light bleeding, spotting, is not uncommon during early pregnancy. It usually occurs around the time that a period would be due. You could very well be 4-5 weeks pregnant so taking another test wouldnt be such a bad idea.

Hope your happy with the result you get. Whatever happens you can always chat on these forums :-)

hi little miss,

i came off the pill in oct and my periods were all over the place. i was a week late for my jan period and i had a tiny bit of spotting which i asumed was my period, it went away and that was that. i also bought my tests of ebay its a good cheap way of being able to test more and i was 8 weeks pregnant so spotting is a sign. unfortunatly i m.c a week later and my periods are still all over the place. i think its just everyones bodys and cycles are different. think thats why doctors cant always give us the info we need.

another thing i took a test when i would of been about 4 weeks preg and it was neg, then another when i was 5 weeks and it was neg and another the next week. it wasnt until i was 8 weeks until it finally came up positive. so maybe your like me and your body isnt showing enough hcg yet?

i would just keep doing tests and hopefully we will both get the results we want soon!

vicky xx
