Hi,

I have a nineteen month old who cannot wakl and it is beginning to worry me now. He will walk if you hold his hands and he will get around by hanging onto the furniture, but when you try and let go of his hands he falls over. I do not understand why he is so terrified of walking independantly. Has anybody been through this with their toddler or know of any ways I can encourage him to walk?

I am thinking of taking him to the doctors to see if they can help me.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Sarah, I would not be too concerned just yet. My first son walked at 12 months but my second didn't walk till he was 17 months, and that was just his first steps. I was concerned but apparently it is quite common, especially in boys! Your son obviously knows how to walk he just needs to gain the confidence to do it himself, it will come, it just takes some longer than others. Talk to your hv about it, she might be able to give you some tips on how to encourage him to do it himself. Hope this helps.

Thanks Nicola, it does help/ I just worry as my friend baby walked at 10 months. And i have heard that boys r lazy anyway hopefully he will get the confidence to do it soon. He started nursery a few weeks back so Im hoping that him seeing the other children walk will encourage him too.
