Buyer's Guide to Sterilisers
For a baby's milk bottles and any expressing equipment, it's important to wash and then sterilise everything before each use, before your baby is one. But should you get an electric, cold water or microwave steriliser?

The Tesco "My Baby" travel steriliser looks like a big sandwich box and is a great way to sterilise on the go. It comfortably fits a couple of big bottles (210ml or thereabouts) and dummies and can be used in microwave or with a cold water solution method. It takes 5 to 8 minutes in the microwave,, depending on the power and is really easy to use. The only things to be wary of is the fact that the unit and the water inside remain very hot for minutes after, and it can be trickier to remove items in this period than a regular sterilising unit, and also do remember to drain the water form the unit before taknig it anywhere- it is lockable, but not a fully waterproof seal!

I am hoping to breast feed most of the time for the first 6 months at least and hope I won't have to use any other products in that time.   I will express some of my milk so daddy can feed our baby due 6-8 weeks.  As I hope not to have to have loads of bottles, is it worth  me getting a steam steriliser.  I wondered about the bags with the solution which I read about on this site.  I don't want to spends lots of money on something I won't need.

Hopefully you will have no problems with breastfeeding but I would suggest having some sort of steriliser at home for when the baby is born.  My daughter was born at 6.30am on a Saturday and had very few breast feeds all day as she was completely knackered.  However, about 11.00pm she decided she was hungry and after two hours of her not latching on properly and me getting very sore (not to mention being knackered from being in labour all the night before!) she was screaming the place down as she was starving.  I ended up giving her a bottle of formula in the early hours of Sunday morning so I was glad I had sterliser and bottles etc there just in case.  Hopefully you will be fine but I think it is best to be prepared!  I would recommend the Avent Microwave Steam Steriliser - only takes around 4 minutes depending on the wattage of your microwave (ideal if baby is screaming!).  It costs around £20 - £25 so not too expensive.  Best of luck with everything.
