Heart Murmur a Worry!!!

Hi,

Yesterday I took my son for his 1st injections and 8 week check up. The doctor said he was really healthy apart from a slight heart murmur. Now apparently this is quite common in young babies but it still doesnt stop you worrying. He has referred us to see a specialist for a second opinion but has anyone had the same thing and what happened??

 As you can appreciate both myself and wife are a wee bit worried, any reassurance would be greatly received!!

My son is 6 weeks today and at 4 weeks he developed a bad cold and was having trouble feeding. We took him to the doctors and she had a good lisen to his lungs and heart. She thought she could hear a murmur so we were booked in to see a baby cardiologist at the hospital. At our appointment last week the paedeotrician was very good and thourough. He did an ECG which came out fine and a lengthly ultrasound on his heart and lungs. The diagnosis was that there was a slight murmur on his right side which is leaking very slighty into his right lung. Now this may sound worrying, however, the doctor said it is nothing to worry about and is very common in babys this young and normally right themselves as they grow. Our baby was given a clean bill of health and they do not want to see us again to follow it up so i suppose they are pretty common and he felt this was no exception. Please don't worry about it too much, it's great you're getting it checked but i'm sure it will be fine. Hope it goes well.

It is very common and my son was told at 8 weeks exactly the same thing and we went to see a consultant who did a scan and everything was fine.  What it is, is that the blood is rushing so fast you hear a murmur with small babies that is not necessarily a problem. Even if it was a real murmur (can't remember the phrase they use for a baby murmur) my best friend has had a murmur all her life and is living perfectly normally with no problems at all. I know it is easy for me to say but I worried myself sick over this and it was nothing so please don't do the same- it really will be ok!
