Ligament pains

Hi all

I am 14 weeks today and over the past week have really felt my ligaments softening and relaxing. I know this is supposed to happen because of the hormone Relaxin but is it normal for small things to hurt so much?

Example, just had a meeting and sat for no more than 5 minutes with one leg crossed over the other. Now my knee is killing me and I can't flex it properly. Also I find if I sneeze violently it really pulls in my lower abdomen.

Is this normal? I'm getting scared to move!

Hi Kelly

Congrats on the pregnancy! If you are anything like me it is totally normal - I had quite severe ligament pain in the early months... even went home from work for a few days when it was really bad - I found my IBS really pulled too during that time, which made movement or sitting still altogether quite uncomfy!! Sneezing could be painful and I used to hold my tummy if I knew it was coming!!! I remember a lot of ladies on the 'due August' thread (the one I'm on) talking about pain when sneezing at around 3-4 months so seems very common. I have found different bits have pulled and hurt all the way through but you get quite used to it and how to protect yourself a bit... I seem to almost not notice the strains sometimes now!

Hope this helps but with everything if you are worried or it gets very painful, check with your midwife or GP... Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Luv

Hi Kelly,

Mummy2B is right, you do ache and pain in pregnancy, they don't tell you that in the books! I have also noticed that the more pregnancies you have the worse it is, I should know, this is my 5th baby. Im 29wks now and I ache if I stand or sit too long and even have days when the corner shop feels like miles away. If you are worried call in and see your GP or midwife. Also keep in mind that when you eventually have your baby in your arms, you will forget about all the aches and pains along the way.

Very best of luck to you. Jayne

Hi

I've been looking through the various threads and this seems the most appropriate to how I'm feeling! I'm 11+4 and during the first few weeks of pregnancy I had the pains that lots of people describe (like mild period pains) but these went away after a couple of weeks. They have now come back with a vengeance and I honestly feel like I have my period all the time - is this normal? I'm really quite worried as it just doesn't feel 'right' if that makes sense?!?!? This is my first child so I have nothing to compare the feeling to and just want to know if I'm over reacting!

Thanks
Aileen

Hi Alieen

It was certainly normal for me right up to 4 months to get 'period type' pains and strains and pulls - I felt often that they didn't feel 'right' and worried alot as this is my first pregnancy and you just don't know what to expect or what is 'normal!' ... the truth is everyone has similar worries and feelings but also everyone is different and each pregnancy is different - I have got to a point now that I accept just about anything as 'normal!!' LOL! Please be reassured you are not the only one - if you are worried or need some reassurance contact your midwife - that is what she is there for and can often put you at ease over the phone. I found joining my due month thread (in my case Due August thread) really useful as all the ladies will be chatting about similar experiences, symptoms and emotions and it really helps to know you are not alone! There will be one for your due month too and they will be able to share your worries!! I am also lucky to have friends who are at the same stage as me too so we can compare experiences!

Good luck with your pregnancy and don't be frightened to ask your midwife anything!

take care

Hi all

Thanks for your advice. Like you say, it's nice just to hear that you're normal!

I've taken to holding my tummy if I feel a sneeze coming now!

Hi all,

I thought I moaned about aches and pains before, but Friday evening had to go to the hospital, I just didn't feel 'right'. They soon reassured me all was normal, but my baby's bum has engaged - I thought great, that doesn't sound that normal. Its very uncomfortable, but keeping my fingers crossed that the baby's legs will stop her from dropping out too soon. Have period like pains all the time and a burning sensation at the very bottom of my back. Glad I haven't got that many weeks left. But its starting to feel like an eternity now.
Good luck everyone

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the reassurance - with all these new experiences and feelings I wasn't sure if I was just being neurotic!!

I've got my 12 week scan and booking in appointment with my midwife on Tuesday so will definitely be taking a long list of questions with me :0)

Good luck to everyone!

Hiya, yeah I've had the odd tweak too - my lower back gets really sore and I have to carry a cushion everywhere.
I've got similar leg problems, and then swelling started 2 weeks ago - I'm at 28 weeks now. The only thing I can do for this is lots of rest as I'm finding that I need to take it easy a lot more.
Aquanatal helps, although sometimes I find even that too much as the physio jumps about a lot - swimming is good, but my breathing is all different - walking is great, although hills kill me.
Also, the great thing about aquanatal is that a midwife and physio run the class, who are great with extra help and advice and tips for getting the care you need.
Normally I'm pretty fit and do a lot of hill walking, so I know it's pregnancy that makes your body feel odd - but it's a great excuse to put my feet up and not do as much.
Also, I find sleeping on my left is the best, with one of those mothercare wedge pillow supporting my baby belly and really helps with the straining feeling- and I sometimes have a pillow between my legs. The only thing is my feet and hands are often numb in the morning, but my doc says this is totally normal.

And I keep telling myself it's only another 3 month, and then the baby is here and the pain will be all worth it.
I feel quite lucky that I haven't had it worse, one of the girls in a local class was wheelchair bound for the last couple of months and ended up having an 11 pounder by c-section.Jeez
