Ovarian cyst in the first trimester

Hi

I am 7 weeks pregnant.

I had a dating scan on Friday as we thought I was further on than I am.

Anyway, during the scan they found a cyst on my right ovary its 6cm x 6cm x 6cm - which I know is pretty big.

I was obviously shocked - but it did explain why I have been having stomach pains.

The midwife advised that it is something to monitor but I should not be worried - they have booked me in for another scan and to meet with the consultant in 5 weeks time.

I an grateful that I will looked after but I am terrified as firstly I am aware that it is big and with the hormones during pregnancy is unpredictable - so could shrink or could grow rapidly. If it does grow then it may rupture and that would be very painful and risks miscarriage - which I am so so worried about!

What I want to know is how to best manage this - should I avoid sex, exercise and anything strenuos until my next scan? Or should I carry on as normal?!

If you have experienced this I would be really grateful if you could tell me what happened? how you coped? etc etc

 Thank you

Natalie

PS - We saw the baby - well fluttering beanie really at the scan and it is developing fine! x

Hi Natalie,

I too had an ovarian cyst...it was spotted 1st on a 8 week scan as i was having pain. They noted it, but told me not to worry about it as they are very common. Nothing more was said until 10 weeks after having my DD was born (we were in Birmingham Childrens Hospital as she was born with a rare form of Liver disaese, nothing to do with my cyst tho!) and a nurse took my temp to be nearly 40 degrees...after much investigation it was discovered tht the cyst had grown to the size of a watermelon and was starting to break down...hence causing the infection and temp. I eventually had it removed in september last yr...it was actually a Brennan Tumour (a benign cyst tht mutates apparently) and have been fine ever since. Bit of a pain having it removed, mainly cos i had to go home to a local hospital in Cardiff and Leave my daughter in Brum, but not too much drama to be honest. Its good that theyre keeping an eye on it...your right about preganancy hormones causing it to do silly things....hopefully it wont be as monsterous as mine (my consultant was pretty amazed by the size, explains why i looked like a beached whale towards the end of my pregnancy!) Cant really help with what you should and shouldnt be doing (i honestly forgot about it during preganancy!).....i dont think excercise or sex will harm you or anything as its on your ovary....they're pretty well protected!! Id just say carry on as normal,i do think theyre quite common...the worst outcome is that you might have to have it removed. Lots of women have cysts that develop regularly and theyre just left alone....think its only a prob in preganancy cos the hormones can make it mutate like mine! Really tho, i wouldnt worry, its unlikely to be anything serious!

Hope tht helps.
