Managing Your Toddler's Eczema

Eczema in children is fairly common, especially the one which they call "atopic dermatitis" or infantile eczema. The rashes associated with this eczema appear dry and scaly and are highly uncomfortable. Since toddlers and children with eczema of any age do not fully understand their condition, parents are the ones responsible for managing their children's eczema.

Primarily, eczema can be managed by seeking treatments. A lot of parents often struggle to find the right treatment for their child. Aside from seeking treatments, the following ways can be done to manage a toddler's eczema:

>>> BATHING <<<

1. Give your toddler a quick bath in lukewarm water to prevent the skin from drying. Dry skin is more prone to irritation.

2. Use soaps that are mild and hypoallergenic. It would be a plus if soaps like these have moisturizers.

3. When bathing, don't rub the soap directly on your child's skin. Lather your hands with soap first then just pat your soaped hands on his body to soap him up. Friction will only further irritate his rashes.

4. Dry your kid in a cotton towel. Don't rub the towel on his skin either. Instead, pat him dry.

>>> CLOTHING <<<

1. Clothe your toddler only in clothes made of cotton. Cotton absorbs sweat and prevents sweat accumulation on the skin. Cotton is also soft and doesn't cause that much friction on the skin compared to synthetic cloth.

>>> SKIN CARE <<<

1. Apply moisturizers on your toddler's skin after bathing. These moisturizers should be mild and hypoallergenic like the soaps you'll be using on them when bathing them.

You may have heard of a few natural methods which are starting to become increasingly popular of late, one of which was tried by a family member. We were all really pleased to see very favourable results for my neice over a long term and so it’s something I thought I would mention in the hope that you may find it beneficial.

After a lot of internet trawling I came across one site that appears to be a very safe source of reliable information as it provides a comparison and review of natural eczema treatments . I really hope this is somewhat useful!

Quick eczema remedies (external skin protection and soothing):

Sea Salt Bath

Sea salt bath not only helps to remove dead skin cells and restore beauty to damaged skin, but it is also a perfect cure for eczema. Sea salt is rich in minerals and helps to reduce pain, sooth inflammation, improve circulation and hydrate tissues. You can make whole body baths or just small amounts of water for local treatment. For a whole body bath add 1 to 2 cups of unrefined high quality sea salt to a warm bath tub. You can add some natural herbal oils to the bath to make it even more soothing. Make sure the water is not too hot. Soak in the bath for at least 15 minutes. Sea salt baths will also detox your body by widening skin pores and letting you sweat without skin irritation.
