hi steffy

i have a 2 1/2 year old and she is able to recognise colours numbers and a few letters. but i do have to say i have been told she is quite advanced. she does chatter all the time and is very observent (but not a golden child cos does fall short in other areas so not bragging!) but i beleive between 2 and 3 they should start to get the hang of these things. with boys it is usually later (as with most things for boys)

i spend 20 mins a day with molly just playing with some toys and chatting about colours and numbers and letters and she has started to pick it up really well. we count the stairs every time we go up and down and when we go for walks i point out colours. i got her a wooden clock with shapes with different colours and the numbers on. she has been able to put the shapes in the clock and can tell me the colours easierly. numbers are getting there. but with letters its not so easy and i must admit i get confused myself with what to teach her. dont know much about phonics etc.

the net is prob a good place to get ideas of interactive fun games to play in everydy situations. and will prob give advice on where he sould be at what age.

but i would say you are prob on the right track. it prob wont take too long  but if your worried speak to your h/v. but spending just 10 mins each day playing with flash cards etc will prob help him loads. hope that helps hon xxx

hi

i have a 3 year old and she knows her colours, numbers and a letters and has done for a good few months now but i think girls are more advanced than boys does your son go school or anything normally they will learn all that at school too

i use to walk my daughter up the stairs counting the steps with her and then write numbers 1-10 on paper and she use to copy me in repeating them, also with colours i use to tell her what every colour was like if she was wearing a pink top when putting it on her i would say look pink top and blue jeans etc

sure your son will do it in his own time and all kids learn at different stages some walk before others some talk before others so i wouldnt worry about it

take care yas

Thank you ladies...

Well i have been hearing boys take just a little more time. What bothers me is he does attend pre-school/daycare..BUT it's like he doesn't learn a thing there! Although he has been starting to "sing" some christmas songs ...i'M thinking i will go with the idea of flash cards.

I just had the hopes he would catch on quicky..since he was a quick walker ( 11months)...but i know it's two different things.

Any ladies with boys out there that can share their experience with this?

hi again steff

may be worth finding out what activities he does at nursery. they should keep a profile of what they do and that should be made available to you. if you are still worried they dont do anough learning activities then perhaps ask to observe for a few hours. if they dont like that then it may be worth finding out how others parents feel, viewing the ofsted report and consider moving him if its not a good overall review. it is so so important that the daycare provider is helping support any learning. it should def be learning mixed with play evenly and not more of one or the other. if you do decide to move him have you concidered a childminder? my daughter goes to her childminder and it has helped her progression so much. they have a more one on one report, they are usually cheaper, can uaully provide better hours and a good childminder will take the child to various different places (such as playgoups, outings play barns or local activites) which will help to improve there learning.

i still think you prob have nothing to worry about but if you find that the childcare you are getting is not doing enough to improve your childs learning then changing that you will prob find a big improvement.

good luck hon xxx

My 2 and half girl is asking me to read signs ie road names etc. I trace the name with her it is the right height. Boys do more active things her friend  { a boy } runs much better and handles balls etc as well as climbing, so swings and roundabouts!

Does he like Fireman Sam or Bob the Builder they might be good for first flash card words and letters.

If they read too fast they can get bored when they go to school so any pace is good. Is he bored with doing it at nursery so pretends not to do it at home? Also my husband is colour blind so never really understood colours.

Good luck it I hope it moves onto the next worry soon.

Hi

My two and a half year old knows most basic colours, but can't count past two.  He just repeats 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 over and over.  I'm just going to let him go at his own pace.  They have so many new things to learn. They just do them in different a different order I think.  I'm sure they'll all get there in the end.

Kyrie can count to 3 as i do it before sending the girls to the stairs she usually says 3 for me if i stop because they've done as i;ve asked!
For colours she know daddy blue and mummy red (the colours of our cars!) and pink as it's lucies fav colour! and she also knows white and black, but she says green is blue, so we wonder if she maybe colour blind like stu;s dad!
