What Should I Do When I Find Out I'm Pregnant?

If a home test kit tells you you're pregnant, what should you do next?

What you should do
Whether or not you have tried using a pregnancy test kit at home, go to see your GP.

Why it's important to get your pregnancy confirmed by a GP
A urine sample will be taken and you can be formally confirmed pregnant.
This means you will then be referred to a hospital and a midwife team for ante-natal care, and appointments can be made for you to have a dating scan (which takes place around 10 to 13 weeks).
You will also be immediately eligible for free prescriptions, but need to register for this via your GP so ask for the form (see above article) when you get confirmation of the pregnancy.

Look after your body
If you have been consciously trying for a baby, you should already have been treating each month as if you are pregnant (until your period appears). Avoid alcohol, smoking and taking drugs during this time, as the baby's vital organs are being developed. Cutting down on caffeine can help too.
Not everyone is consciously trying for a baby and it is best not to worry if you did not realise you were pregnant whilst 'partying' - what's done is done. However, once you do know, it's wise to treat your body with a bit more respect as a serious precaution.

Next steps
Don't worry too much right now about birth choices and so on, instead just concentrate on getting yourself into good habits. Prepare for pregnancy lifestyle changes and allow yourself time to get on top of a good pregnancy diet.
Don't feel you have to tell the world that you're pregnant straight away. Many women like to wait until they are at least 12 weeks gone (after this time the risk of miscarriage drops considerably, plus if you wait until your 'booking in' with the mdiwife you can make sure the scans are all OK too). As for work, you don't have to tell your employer until much later if you don't want to. For more about this go to maternity rights at work.

And don't forget... you can always visit the ThinkBaby Forums to ask questions and talk to other women going through what you are going through. This is a time when there are lots of unknowns but you don't necessarily want everyone around you to know you are or might be pregnant, so coming to ThinkBaby, where you can be anonymous, can really help!

Hey and Congrats on ur fab baby news.

U will have to go to the docs and get them to confirm  that u r pregnant and once u get ur results ur doc will refer u to a midwife and u will get ur booking appointment and scan appt.

I was the same, i found out i was pregant when i was 6 weeks so i tried so hard not to get excited but couldnt help it. We told or families right away, which i know ur not meant to do but we couldnt help it. We didnt buy anything until we were 20 weeks tho as i was convinced something was gonna go wrong.

Just make sure u enjoy ur pregnancy but it is so quick at passing. I am now 27 weeks and cat believe it.

Good luck to u and babba xxx
