Baby Rudy is on the mend after life-saving surgery
A poorly baby is on the mend after having complicated heart surgery at just one day old. The little boy was born with a blockage in his heart causing it to swell to a dangerous size.
Surgeons at Birmingham Children’s Hospital used microscopic instruments to unblock the aortic valve in little Rudy Maxwell-Jones’ heart, to give him a chance of survival.
The complex operation took 36 hours, but five weeks later Rudy is able to breathe without the help of machines.
“His life was hanging in the balance,” explained his mum Jeanette Shiel. “It’s a real miracle he’s still here.”
“To look at him now, you’d hardly think it was the same baby,” added dad Rupert Maxwell-Jones. “He’s breathing well, he’s got a good colour and he’s busy flirting with the nurses who make a great fuss of him.”
