 FETAL DEVELOPMENT 29 / 05 / 05

Fetal development: Week 18

Your baby is now over 14 centimetres from crown to rump and weighs 140-160 grammes. She already has the protective covering of lanugo on her delicate skin and now begins to produce vernix, a white waxy covering, to coat her skin and keep it moisturised in her watery environment. You’ll probably be able to see traces of this vernix when you first hold your baby.

The umbilical cord and placenta are continuing to develop to support your ever-growing child, and now your placenta and baby are now around the same size.

What’s happening with Mum?
The extra weight of your uterus might make you feel a little off-balance, if so choose sensible footwear to help you cope. You might also find that you feel faint, light-headed or dizzy occasionally as your blood pressure falls, if so make sure you rest, lie down for a few minutes if you can and recover. This is a very normal experience in pregnancy, but if you find it happens often, or severely, then make sure you mention it to your doctor or midwife.

If you’ve already begun to feel your baby’s movements as she turns somersaults and grabs at the umbilical cord don’t be surprised if your partner can’t yet feel them, it will take a little longer for the movements to be strong enough to be felt outside the womb.

NB: All pregnancies are different and fetal growth rates vary, this is meant only as an approximate guide to development. If you have any concerns about your developing pregnancy then speak to your doctor.

Pregnancy experiences

Useful pregnancy books - I saw the review of Yehuid Gordon's Birth and Beyond on this website, and it is a book I have and which has been pretty useful. It's also very dry and informative, rather than anecdotal. Any of you girls got any suggestions for books? Take a look at the book recommendations others gave Shelley on the forum.

You can join in the discussions and share pregnancy experiences and advice with other ThinkBaby members in the pregnancy folder.

Ever feel like you're chasing your tail? - Went to homeopath for tissue salts and general check. Hoping not to feel so tired in the evenings, even when I sleep at lunchtime. Achieving little besides looking after him, the house, and me (a bit). It's tough going for Isabelle in her pregnancy blog for this week.

You can keep your own pregnancy blog easily on ThinkBaby, and even link it up to you photos in the gallery. So why not start or update your own?
