Buggies from birth, for under £100By Sarah Lawson | | |
| | Mamas & Papas Nipi Stroller (£59) |
We've already looked at good buggies for under £50, but most of these are only suitable once your baby is about six months old. This is mainly because, in order to say 'suitable from birth', a buggy must be able to fully recline so the newborn baby can lay flat. On many cheaper, no-frills models, there are only upright settings.
If you want to get one pushchair that sees you through from birth up until you no longer need a buggy at all, you really don't have to spend more than £100. When thinking about what you do and don't need for your personal use, check out the Buyers Guide to Pushchairs.
In the meantime, here are some great-value options…
Buggies from birth for less than £60
In the under £100 category, Mamas & Papas perform very well. Admittedly, their cheaper models don't have all the whizzy features of the £300-plus ones, but you can get some really great options including the
Nipi Stroller at just £59.
The Nipi has more adjustable features (five-position back rest and leg rest) and more comfy padding in the seat than the under-£50 M&P versions. The wheels are well suspended and easier to manouvre, and the basket is spacious for all that paraphernalia babies travel with!
It's suitable from birth up to the age when your child is 15kg (approx three years, but this varies child to child), and the buggy weighs 6.4kg.

Classy buggies for less than £100
Mamas & Papas' Mamu range of pushchairs is designed as a competitive-budget series, including a lightweight for £35, and the impressive Mamu mu2, which is suitable from birth and costs just £65. Again it has good adjustable options, but it also comes with a hood and raincover included in the price, and weighs 6.1kg.
The chains offer an array of prices to suit all their customers, so it's not surprising that Mothercare do a couple of good, from-birth pushchairs under £100. Usefully, their website also allows you to choose products by age range and price, if you want to make sure you stick to your budget.
The Mothercare Altan pushchair is the cheapest of these, at £69.99. It includes a Weathershield in the price and is compatible with the Auto Baby infant carrier (it clicks into the top of it), if you want to convert this model into a travel system for an extra £79.99. It feels solid and comes with a detachable play tray with cup holder as a nice little extra.
The Mothercare Aulto stroller has an RRP of £74.99 and for that, you get most of the aspects of the Altan but also more padded support for a new baby's head, and the detachable hood comes with a pocket and a viewing window so you can see your child.
Cosatto have a from-birth model for an RRP of £84.99, which only has three recline positions, but is built with comfort and sturdiness in mind. Again the hood has a viewing window, and comes with a good-sized basket and raincover. It also has a useful one-hand folding mechanism.
| | Urban Detour Vesta (£99.99) |
You might think, with all these other bargains, that going up to £99.99 is a bit pointless, but just scooting in under the £100 barrier are a couple of great, premium models.
The Graco Mojo is a one-hand-fold stroller which is funky, flexible, light and also well-padded to make it a cosy ride from newborn to around three years. The price includes a hood with a viewing window, a raincover and an apron (to cover your child's knees), as well as a large basket.
And one of last summer's great launches, was the Silver Cross POP. At £99.99, it's great to be able to swan around town with the Silver Cross brand without a hefty price tag.
Weighing 7.3kg, the POP is not too heavy considering the crafted body of the thing, and the smooth recline action makes it popular with mums who have just got their baby off to sleep and don't want to disturb them. It comes with a raincover included in the price, and is compact when folded.
Three-wheelers under £100
You might imagine that three-wheelers are the preserve of 4x4-driving posh people, but there are three great models on the market that just sneak under the £100 mark.
The Urban Detour Vesta, RRP £99.99, is a fairly light three-wheeler available at Mothercare. It has a bumper bar and comes with the Weathershield and, though it only has two seat positions, it's a smooth ride even for tinies.
Again, Mamas & Papas have a great option from their Mamu range: the Mamu mu3 three-wheeler, for £99.
It weighs 9.5kg which is not bad for a three-wheeler, comes with off-road wheels for more adventurous parents, is compact when folded, and the price includes a good-sized shopping basket, hood and raincover.
And finally… New for 2007, Hauck's Fun For Kids Roadster SL is a three-wheeler that has an RRP of £99.99 and has an adjustable handlebar, adjustable footrest and removable front bar, for extra flexibility. It has a removable hood and shopping basket and weighs in not too badly for a 'jogger', at 11kg.
