The concept:
Mothercare hails its own-brand sterilising bottle as a revolutionary product. Designed to do away with the need for units and bags and to pare down sterilising to the minimum, all the bottle requires for sterilising is its complete self, a microwave and ninety seconds.

The sterilisation works conventionally through steam, but unlike other products the steam source is the lid of the bottle. To sterilise you fill the lid to the marked depth, place the bottle bits and pieces on top and then click on the bottle itself upside-down: A fully self-contained unit.

In action:
A fully self-contained, microwavable, rapid-sterilising bottle is an intriguing option - particularly if you're no stranger to being caught out and about without a prepared bottle - so we were keen to put these Mothercare promises to the test. We have to confess to being a little cynical at first as it just seemed to good to be true, and we thought we would be bound to find the whole thing too fiddly or easy to get wrong. But no, the sterilising bottle really does work, and it's simple to use.

The instructions for preparing the bottle for sterilising are quite easy to follow, and once you've done it once you won't have any problems. You start off, of course, by washing all the bottle parts in hot water. The bottle's bits and pieces, including the handling tongs, go into the lid where they're suspended over the water (once you've filled it to the marked level). You then simply put the upside-down bottle itself on over the top and microwave. It takes just ninety seconds to sterilise one bottle, and you can sterilise up to six at one time if you microwave for longer: The length of time you need to microwave different numbers of bottles is helpfully printed on the sides of the bottle.

Once the bottles are sterilised you need to allow them to cool for a few of minutes before you can handle them because they're very hot. And that's really our only gripe with the system, you have to factor in cooling time (how long exactly will depend on whether you've got asbestos hands), but even so it's still faster than your regular sterilising unit cycle and you don't need the unit. Because the bottle is self-contained, it stays sterilised until you open it, so it's easy to always have a bottle ready to go.

For use in the home the sterilising bottle is a great time and space saver, but it's when you're out and about that the bottle really comes into its own. If you've stayed out later than intended or you're away on a trip somewhere, as long as you know you've got a microwave at your disposal you don't need to worry nor lug along a sterilising unit and lots of bottles: Because the bottle's so quick to prepare you can get away with taking far fewer, even just managing with one is possible.

Reliability & value
So far we've had no problems with the bottles, although we have lost one of the pairs of tongs from our six-pack and a couple of the disks. We've bought extra silicon teats for variable flow and expect to need to replace a couple of the original teats eventually. We've had no problems with leaking at all.

The bottles aren't cheap and some may be put off by the price at first. But when you consider what an entire sterilising system costs the bottles suddenly look a lot less expensive, and when you factor in the time and space saving and their emergency out and about usefulness they start to look like a bargain.

Do you need it?
Whether you'll like these bottles or not really depends on whether you value the advantages they offer. If space isn't a problem and you never have an issue having your feeds ready, you might not see the point in shelling out more than you need for bottles. But even if you don't want to switch your entire system to these bottles, it could be really useful to have a couple for when you're travelling. Obviously you need a microwave to make the most of the bottles, but should you ever want or need to, you can also sterilise the bottles by other usual means.

Parents who prefer narrow-necked bottles won't like the fact that these are only available in a wide-neck version, and if you decide to try them out for a change it might take a little getting used to. We've used both varieties and generally find the wide-neck bottles easier to clean and fill, so had no problem on that score.

The ThinkBaby verdict

For anyone who's been caught on the hop without bottles ready, or who's keen to save as much space as possible in the kitchen these have to be considered. Quick and easy to sterilise with minimum fuss as long as there's a microwave to hand. Bottles aren't cheap but compared to the cost of a whole sterilising unit and bottles, and factoring the convenience element, they certainly start to look it.
