With his 'Where's Spot?' book and the lift-the-flap series that has followed, Eric Hill has been delighting small children for 30 years. Spot is a honey and brown puppy, and his stories often also feature his mum in short, reassuring narratives which allow children to share their experience of the normal stuff of everyday life (helping mummy make a cake, go shopping etc) through reading time with you. The books are simple but packed with great first-reader opportunities. Children love the anticipation of opening flaps, even once they become familiar with the story, as this rewards their memory and their rational thinking. The images of the home can be discussed - object naming with older toddlers, or with smaller toddlers, pointing to things which you ask them find on the page, long before your child can form the words, and so on.
Here, the Easter Bunny has hidden some eggs for Spot and his friends to find. Lift the flaps to find eggs under flowerpots, cushions and in the grandfather clock.
Babies love watching you lift each object to find a surprise egg, while the tough boardbook design allows slightly older children to enjoy going through the pages on their own hunt.
At Easter, many small children enjoy the thrill of egg hunts etc, but if you don't want to give them sweets or chocolate, a lovely book like this is the perfect treat!
