Book review: Essential Baby

Essential Baby by Debbie

Gorgeous patterns; packed with “Aah factor” photography
Oh, to have the time to knit!
Features: A “capsule collection” of baby knitting patterns, beautifully photographed and clearly explained
Price: £14.99 RRP
Contact: Quadrille

Essential Baby The concept
There's something so right about hand-knitted clothes and accessories for tiny babies. Blame it on the nesting instinct if you like, or that hankering after a bygone age when we yearn to do what our mothers did for us, but Debbie Bliss hits that nerve so perfectly with this new book.

And while it's beautiful stuff, the patterns are do-able, even if you're not an expert with the needles. Novice knits can learn the techniques at the front of the book; experts will soon be clicking away, inspired by the gorgeous photography.

As well as the obligatory matinee coat and blanket, you'll find quirkier choices such as a cotton-knit bathrobe, a knitted house picture for the nursery and even a squashy beanbag.

Organisation
The book is split into three sections: Coming Home, full of baby must-haves; At Home, for chilling out, and On the Go, with plenty of practical suggestions for keeping your little one snug in the great outdoors, including an adorable duffel coat and cable-knit socks.

The ThinkBaby verdict

The unrivalled queen of baby knits does it again with beautiful patterns that are eminently knittable
