Review: Micralite Toro Newborn

Micralite Toro Newborn

Lightweight, compact and a real head-turner
Handle adjustment is tricky; seat position a little on the low side
Features: Can be used with carrycot from birth or with seat from 6 months. Unique frame design means great manoeuvrability yet very compact when folded. The rain cover zips on for a streamlined look and the hood has a built-in flip-out sun visor for those rare occasions when the British weather cheers up. Big basket underneath, but not designed for heavy shopping. The hood and footmuff are available in orange, sand, black and emerald, with the seat in black.
Price: RRP £399, including protective foot boot, rain cover; winter warmer £45; fleece liners from £15.95; sun and bug net £28
Weight: 8.5kg
Dimensions: (folded) 100 x 40 x 36cm
Contact: Micralite website or call 01892 615 900

The concept
Funky and functional, this is the latest addition to the Micralite range; it's lightweight, easy to use and good looking. The frame looks like a three-wheeler in reverse, with the big wheels close together at the rear, and small, well-spaced front wheels.

In action
The one-handed folding mechanism is a piece of cake to operate, as is adjusting the seat position, though fully reclined seems quite low compared to other buggies.
Removing the seat fabric to insert the carrycot is also straightforward, and this is deep enough to really protect your baby from the elements, and makes the system suitable from birth.
If you want it to make a travel system, just fix on the car seat adaptors and add a Maxi-Cosi car seat. The pneumatic rear tyres help give a smooth ride, while the lockable swivel wheels at the front are well spaced to give stability and ease of steering.
Determined outdoor types can buy the All-terrain Kit, £59.95, two big wheels for the front and a stabilising bar so that the buggy can cope with a rougher ride.

Benefits
A stylish and practical buggy that, with the carrycot, will take you from birth through to toddlerhood with ease. Can be steered and folded one-handed and is compact enough for anyone short on space. The back wheels detach for more compact folding.

Drawbacks
While the carrycot can be used parent-facing, the seat cannot. The basket is inaccessible when the seat is fully reclined.

The ThinkBaby verdict

Small and almost perfectly formed, this is a great buggy for urban mums
Portability/storage: 4/5
