Frugi: it means 'fruits of the earth', and it's the fruit of four years' hard work by Lucy and Kurt Jewson. To you, as parents, it will come to mean great quality (but great value) organic cotton clothing for children from birth to six.
Frugi clothes for real-nappy wearers
Frugi started life as Cut4Cloth, so called because, as any 'real' nappy user will know, baby clothes need to be that bit bigger to accommodate the extra bulk. It was born of Kurt and Lucy's experiences of using real nappies and finding the cut of some clothes just a little too, well, narrow. Maternity leave gave Lucy the time to hatch the plan to start their own business while Kurt continued working for a local building supplies company in Cornwall. As the range has expanded to included clothing for children beyond the nappy stage, the name seemed a little too descriptive, hence the rebranding as Frugi. You'll still see the Cut4Cloth stamp on appropriate items in the 0-2 years clothing, so the name is not lost.
Natural fabrics that are soft, but hard-wearing
The name may have changed, but the ethos hasn't - from the start Lucy and Kurt have used organic cotton, and they are keen to ensure that the growers and manufacturers work in good conditions - and that their families are well looked after too. And it doesn't stop there, as Frugi is part of the One Percent for the Planet project, whereby one per cent of the company's turnover goes to environmental projects both in the UK and overseas.
The fabrics are soft and silky - and hardwearing - and the clothes are perfect styles for active kids. Little girls will look gorgeous in the Song bird dress, £20, and summer shrug, £15 (ages 0-4 years), while boys are ready for action in the Swashbuckler romper,£16 (ages 0-24 months), as modeled by Lucy's youngest son, Sam, one.
Great clothes for mum, too
Also new to the range are two very clever breastfeeding tops: double-layered with vertical openings on the under layer, so your tummy will remain undercover at all times (essential in those early not-quite-lost-the bump days). They're also great value at £25.
The full range is launching January 2008 - keep you eye on www.welovefrugi.com for more details.
