How does the pill affect fertility?

There's no evidence that using the pill can lead to long-term infertility, but when you come off the pill it can take some time before you start ovulating again.

How long it takes to resume ovulating depends on many factors, including: your age, how long you were on the pill, what kind of pill you were on and your general health.

Some women start ovulating immediately and can fall pregnant on their first pill-free cycle, others may have to wait several months, a year or even longer before their cycles return to normal. Most women, however, will have resumed ovulating within six months.

Taking the pill won't cause infertility, but it may mask some symptoms, such as irregular periods, as the periods you have on the pill aren't real periods at all, but artificially induced perfect cycles. If you had irregular periods before you started taking the pill then the chances are that you will revert to irregular cycles once you stop taking it.

hi there, my husband and i are thinking of trying for a baby, i looked up this website to do a bit of research as this will be our first child and there is sooo much to think about!

I have been on the pill about 5 years, how long after i come off my pill until it is safe to start trying for a baby and do i need to start taking folic acid straight away? i read somewhere you should take it up to 3 months before you try to conceive, your advice would be appreicated

Thanks
Sarah
