Maternitywear for Autumn Pregnancy

Autumn is here and with it comes a whole new set of maternity wardrobe challenges, and the solutions will depend on how far into your pregnancy you are. If you're only just showing, you can plunge right in and buy a winter wardrobe safe in the knowledge that you'll be wearing it right until your baby's due date, but if you're rapidly approaching D-day, a bit of layering could be all you need.

The essentials
Trousers/jeans
Something smart but comfortable for the office is essential, as is something casual (and very comfortable). The good news is that you can buy pretty much any style of trousers cut for maternity, so you're sure to find a pair that suits your shape. Skinny jeans tucked into boots with a tunic/kaftan-style top is an on-trend and flattering look, or try a boot-cut with heels to lengthen the legs.

Tailored under-bump trousers, £30, Mothercare
Essential cigarette pants, £79, Crave Maternity

Tops
Soft fabrics are easy to wear, so go for jersey or lightweight knits, adding a luxurious touch with beading or velvet trims. Make sure you have at least one camisole to wear under tops and cardigans on cooler days - layering is best for autumn with its changeable temperatures. For tops, styles that are fitted at the bust then flow over the bump are flattering - or go for something clingier if you dare.

Cardigans/jackets

Cardigan These are an autumn essential, perfect for throwing over any top on a cooler day, or to cosy up in front of the telly with. Longer-length cardigans can double as jackets, especially if you choose a heavier knit. Some will belt above the bump, some below, the choice is yours. When you're pregnant you're less likely to feel the cold, so you may not need a winter coat (which explains why there aren't too many about), but if you need one, try Mothercare or Blooming Marvellous for good-value versions.

Skirts/dresses
The wrap dress is a perennial favourite as it can be fitted to your expanding girth. An empire line is also flattering. Above-the knee dresses can be teamed with jeans or leggings and boots, or go for longer lengths for a smarter look. Skirts can fit above or below the bump - choose a narrow, more tailored style for work, or try long, flowing styles if you fancy the boho look.
