Reusable Nappies

Enjoy the freestyle feeling of reusables.
Whether you've had your baby already or you are still preparing, you may well have pondered the pros and cons of disposable nappies versus reusable ones. Distant memories of your mother keeping a bucket of soaking, pooey nappies in the bathroom when your brother or sister was little may have put you off, but, whilst the good old terry nappy still exists, reusable nappy technology (and style) has come on leaps and bounds.

In the last couple of weeks, a debate has raged on the ThinkBaby forums about whether the ease of disposable nappies merits the ecological implications of creating so much landfill waste. If you're still in two minds, check out The Great Nappy Divide. And if you're warming to the idea of reusable ones, here are a few of the great UK-based companies worth checking out.

Colourful appeal
Tots Bots
Based in Scotland and operating online, this company know their stuff. Their nappies are soft and easy to use. They can provide fleece liners, too, so you don't even need to flush the liner down the loo. Plus this lot are recommended by ThinkBaby regular mummyGoth! www.totsbots.com

Funky behinds
Minki Nappies
Also getting honorable mentions in the forums are Minki Nappies, who sell nappies and 'yoyos' (pull-ups for when your child is potty training) and the most amazing selection of 'wraps' (which go round the nappy, as the name suggests). They do some funky designs in all manner of different fabrics and offer to make bespoke nappy sizes in case you need them for older/bigger children.

Like Twinkle Twinkle, Kittykins stock various different brands of nappies and wraps including some rather swishy wool ones. Again, recommended on our forums by mummyGoth, they offer a quick Q&A test to see what best suits your needs.

Now that I'm halfway through I've decided that it's time to start thinking about the little decisions that we'll all have to make sooner or later.
With my 2-yr-old, LP, we just bought disposables and never really thought about the idea of reusable nappies. I think all the old ideas about scraping, boiling and scrubbing them entered my mind. I know that things have changed these days and they are easier to use and clean than before.
However, I'm still in debate. Obviously, I'd like to do my bit for the environment (this is the environment my children will grow up and the idea that my son's nappies will still be degrading while his great-great grandchildren are alive is a huge insentive). I know that the initial outlay is much more expensive ...
