Review: Gina Ford's Top Tips for Contented Babies

Top Tips for Contented Babies & Toddlers by Gina Ford

The core information based on Ford's 'Contented Baby' sleep and feeding regimes in a handy little guide
Ford's firm routines are not for everybody
Features: Easy to follow, short chapters looking at key problems
Price: £6.99 RRP
Contact: Vermillion at Random House

Gina Ford's reputation as an experienced nanny lead to the publication of her first book, The Contented Little Baby Book. Her suggested regimes have claimed to help thousands of desperate parents in need to ways to get their babies feeding well, sleeping better and crying less. Her routines include controlled feeding and sleeping times which some parents find hard to do if they prefer demand-feeding (breastfeeding as their child's crying tells them to, for example). However, despite being controversial, Ford probably appeals to the 'Supernanny'-literate generation of new parents, rather than writers like Penelope Leach and Deborah Jackson who champion time-rich attachment parenting, and sharing your bed with your baby.

Organisation
The book is small and compact but the type is large and the subheadings make it easy to find your way around and get straight to the relevant chapter when you're in need of some advice.
The chapters include Sleeping, Milk Feeding, Weaning, Potty Training, Behaviour and Habits and Safety.
Because it is a short and sweet little volume, there is no index at the back.

Useful advice
Babies are complex beings! Each subject warrants a library of books in itself, but Gina Ford's tips here cover the main areas where problems might arise and ways in which to overcome them. However, despite the title, there isn't a great deal for older toddlers and this should be regarded as a book addressing the first year rather than much beyond that.

The ThinkBaby verdict

Short and to the point. It's a good place to start but for big problems you'll need to read further somewhere else. One for your handbag, maybe?
