Review: Silver Cross 3D system

Silver Cross 3D pram system

Clever design means you don't need a separate carrycot
Seat slightly narrow
Features: A pram and pushchair combination that's compact and easy to fold - a modern masterpiece from traditional favourites Silver Cross
Price: £280 Ventura car seat (group 0) £75; co-ordinating accessory pack £60 (includes footmuff, changing bag and parasol)
Weight: 10.3kg
Folded: 103 x 40cm
Colours: Pistachio (shown), Apollo, Marina
Accessories: Apron, hood, raincover, basket
Contact: www.silvercross.co.uk

The concept:
A clever pushchair on a lightweight aluminium frame: with the pram insert, it's a cosy and comfortable parent-facing pram for your newborn to lie flat; without it's a multi-position forward-facing seat.

In action:
There are two ingenious things about this buggy: first is its easy conversion from pram to pushchair - the machine-washable fabric insert means you don't need to buy a separate (ie, bulky and expensive) carrycot.
Second is the chassis - once you've got the hang of it, folding and unfolding are simple, smooth operations, though not one-handed, and it locks and is free-standing when folded, making it easy to carry and store. For a complete travel system, add the award-winning Ventura car seat.

Benefits:
In pram mode, it offers excellent support for your newborn, and the hood and apron offer good all-round protection from the elements. (We rate the comfort overall as 3/5 but we give it 4/5 in pram-mode.)
The handles are height-adjustable and the front wheels can be fixed or swivelling. It's smooth and easy to push, and the sleek lines of the aluminium chassis make it a good-looking buggy.

Drawbacks:
In pram mode the basket, though deep and lovely, is difficult to access. The seat may prove a little on the snug side for toddlers.

The ThinkBaby verdict

Traditional values plus modern good looks equals a desirable pushchair at a not outrageous price
Portability/storage: 4/5
Usability: 4/5
Comfort: 3/5
Quality: 4/5
Value: 3/5
