To people who only like to shower, the idea of sitting in a pool of your own muck seems pretty gross at the best of times. However, a relaxing, soothing bath is just what many new mums crave.
Because water does not enter the vagina, you do not need to worry that it can cause an infection whilst your body is healing. Instead, it can be a good way of gently clearing out the bloody debris (lochia) after the birth.
If you have had an episotomy or have piles, it can be a good way to soothe your sore parts, and some people like to have a sitz bath. This is a bath that just covers the bottom and hips, of water with salt in it. It is used to ease pain after surgery.
If you are having a bath, make sure you don't overuse soaps that could aggrevate your tender parts and make sure you rinse your breasts well if you are breastfeeding.
Also, you may well need someone to help you get out of the bath for the first week or so, because your back may be sore or you may feel weakened if the water is too hot.
Whether you are bathing or showering, always make sure someone else is caring for your new baby.
