Coming off the pill

Some doctors recommend that you come off the pill three months before you start trying to conceive, others say there's no need to wait and that you can start trying right away.

The amount of time it takes to clear the pill from your system depends on many factors, including: your age, how long you were on the pill, what kind of pill you were on, and your general health. There's no evidence that any residual elements of the pill will damage a fetus if you do conceive in the first three months, and some women conceive in their first cycle off the pill as there is often a fertility spike at this time. But waiting for a few months before you start trying for a baby does have its advantages.

For a start a break between coming off the pill and trying to conceive will give you the chance to reacquaint yourself with your natural cycle so you can date a pregnancy more accurately if it does happen later. You can also use those three months to prepare the rest of your body for pregnancy by starting taking the right supplements (most importantly folic acid), having a preconception health check - including checking for immunity from Rubella -, improving your diet, cutting back smoking and alcohol and starting a fitness regime if need be.

If you do decide that you want to wait a few months before trying, then you'll need to use an alternative short-term form of contraception in the meantime.

I would like to come off the pill now and only have 1 week until I finish my pack of pills but due to my husband and I going to Egypt in 2 weeks I was told by my nurse not to be pregnant when I'm out there. I don't believe I would fall pregnant that quick anyway but I am due my period before I go therefore was going to carry the next pack of pills so I don't have my period on holiday. do you think if I came off the pill now that my body would think it was the end of the pack and therefore I would have my period before the hols? and also is it wise to be off the pill on holiday when drinking alcohol? please email me kisha.thomas@angliangroup.com with the reply. Thanks
