Review: Peter Rabbit Touch & Feel book

Peter Rabbit: Touch & Feel

The trademark gentleness of Beatrix Potter's distinctive illustrations in a first-read format
This has been adapted for under-ones, so it's not for Potter purists
Price: £7.99

First books don't have to be works of literary genius (see our Buyer's Guide to Books for Babies but instead, should be full of contrast and easy, fun sensory delights.

Beatrix Potter was never shy of using complicated names and language in her charming children's books, but the soft rural pictures she painted in words and images should be enjoyed from a very young age.
Hence - this is a sweet and simple adaptation of various Potter characters, in little scenes, with captions you can read to your child, and fabric touch-spots they can stroke.
The text is not too long, and invites you to ask questions about the pictures, which is great for slightly older toddlers.
Meanwhile, the brown furry feel of Benjamin Bunny's coat, Mr Jeremy Fisher's shimmery shiny fish, the silky dress the naughty kittens are tearing at, and Jemiima Puddle-duck's fetching corduroy shawl, all help bring the images to life for under-ones.

The book is make of thick board so it won't tear as your baby paws at the pictures, and you will find lots to talk about in the pages, from simple counting and exploration of colour, to chatting about the sounds different animals make.

The ThinkBaby verdict

A pretty but sturdy boardbook for little hands to play with
Quality: 4/5
Illustrations: 5/5
Value:5/5

Your baby might not be onto Harry Potter by his first birthday, but there are some lovely cloth and boardbooks that are perfect from birth to 18 months, which develop a useful love of 'reading'.
