Is Travel Insurance different if you're pregnant?
Four out of five pregnant women plan to take an overseas holiday with their partner during the pregnancy, but most have no idea what kind of travel insurance they will need.
Travel insurance specialists Essential Travel receive around 60 calls a day from women in their first trimester with concerns about the status of their pregnancy. Many worry that insurers classify pregnancy as a ‘pre-existing medical condition’. In reality 99% of pregnant women can travel on a standard travel insurance policy and should experience no problems.
There are some basic rules which pregnant women need to be aware of when travelling:
1. Being pregnant is not classed as a medical condition unless you have had problems with a previous pregnancy
2. You can travel on a standard insurance policy providing you are back in the UK within eight weeks of your due date. This means that you are covered up to week 32 of your pregnancy. But do check this as some insurers have a cut off of around 28 weeks.
3. Emergency medical expenses due to pregnancy are covered as long as you are not expected to give birth within eight weeks of the start of the trip, during the trip or within eight weeks of the end of the trip.
