Not the way it usually happens, then!
DIY and building the baby’s nursery is generally thought of as a traditional job for dads-to-be. But a new survey has suggested it’s actually their pregnant partners who are doing the hard graft.
Nearly 1,500 mums answered questions about their baby preparations in a survey by BabyChild.org.uk. The majority, 78%, used DIY or flat-packed furniture to decorate their baby’s nursery and 41% claimed to build these items alone.
Only 12% said the baby’s dad built the furniture alone, while 30% did it as a couple. The main reason women gave for doing the work alone was because “their partner was not getting it done”. Although 31% felt it helped them with the “nesting” process.
“It was surprising to see just how many pregnant mums took on the difficult job of building their baby’s nursery furniture alone, especially given the fact that the majority of mums did so in their third trimester when rest is of the utmost importance,” said Jill Tovey from BabyChild.org.uk. “It can be frustrating when your other half isn’t getting the job done, but going it alone is never idea; especially given how stressful DIY can be!”
