Don’t film your ultrasound scans, say professionals
Sonographers could miss vital warning signs if parents-to-be are filming
Parents-to-be shouldn’t be allowed to record ultrasounds on mobile phones or video cameras, pregnancy scan experts say.
The Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) have warned that parents-to-be are putting their unborn baby at unnecessary risk as the home movie could distract sonographers. It also warned that legal complications could arise if an abnormality with the baby is recorded by the scan, but is not reported because the sonographer was distracted during the scan.
Currently it is down to the individual hospital to decide if excited mums-and-dads-to-be can film their ultrasound, but the SCoR wants to see a blanket ban on the practice.
"This is an environment where you expect the sonographer to be able to act professionally and be able to detect problems, so the potential for distraction is a serious thing," said Richard Evans, chief executive of the society.
