Maternity casual party wear: Part three

Casual but effortlessly chic for informal gatherings

We've covered the dress-up side of party maternitywear, but at an informal office do, an evening with friends or round at the neighbours for lunch, a more effortless look is probably more appropriate. So here are some of our favourites from the smart winter casuals on offer.

Tweed-look jacket: £34.99

You might feel you're so over tweed, but the great thing about it is that it never really goes out of fashion, you can just tweak how you wear it, so it can actually be a great maternity buy. We love this Tweed jacket from Vertbaudet for its throw-over-everything flexibility and the high-tying belt that refuses to let your bump be a disadvantage. It's tailored in the right places and would look great over your jeans and a dressy top. What's more it shows that stylish maternity wear needn't break the bank.

Available colours: Black/grey tweed
Price: £34.99

Duffle cardigan and boot-cut jeans: £24.00, £29.00

A double-whammy from JoJo Maman Bébé. The duffle coat cardigan is a good answer for those who want to wrap up warm over winter but don't want to invest in a full winter maternity coat. It's casual but still manages to look smart.

Wear it with boot-cut jeans or a long denim skirt and low-heeled boots for a long silhouette. And talking of boot-cut jeans we're a fan of these soft, stretchy jeans with a slight fade and available in two indigo colours. There's an adjustable elastic back waist to keep the stretchy magic tucked away neatly and inside leg lengths of 29", 31" or 33".

Available colours: Cardigan - black, cream. Jeans - indigo, dark indigo
Price: £24.00, £29.00

Silk chiffon top: £34.99

Casual, feminine and floaty for the dressed-without-trying look, this silk chiffon top from Blooming Marvellous scores well. The ruched detail around the bust adds interest without glitz and the long, light sleeves flatter the arms: good if you prefer to keep them covered or they've gone a bit butcher's wife during pregnancy.

The top is in mixed rose, duck-egg and mocha colours and comes with a mocha camisole in polyester for preserving decency.

Short skirt: £21.99

If you're a laid-back media luvvy then Vertbaudet's short skirt might catch your eye as it did ours. We love the attitude of this sassy skirt: pregnant but still foxy. It's suitable for the most informal of party season events, can look classically sleek teamed with a polo and boots and will work hard as day-wear too.

Available colours: Black, beige
Price: £21.99

Knee-length basic black skirt: £25

If you're looking for a simple black skirt to work with a party top then Mothercare's stretch-fabric knee-length skirt might be worth a look. It's simple, hangs well and can work as part of a smart or informal ensemble.

A deep, stretch-jersey waistband sits below your bump. The skirt is fully lined and comes in numerous sizes but a standard length of 27 inches.

Available colours: Black
Price: £25

Astrid cardigan: £64.50

A lambswool and angora-mix wrap-around cardi that will instantly add a little something to a casual outfit, and could easily be worn with many of the more dressy options we looked at last week.

The luxury fabric and hand-beaded trim details are elegant and dressy without being glitzy, while a touch of nylon adds stretchiness. At a full price of £86 this isn't a cheap cardi, but catch it on sale now from Crave at £64.50 and it looks a lot more reasonable.

Available colours: Black
Price: £64.50
