Early attempts at banging kitchen pots with wooden spoons soon sorts the maestros from the rockers.
There are some great first drumkits,
colour-keyboard pianos and plastic trumpets around, but this new Wooden Music Maker is a classy all-in-one music centre for slightly older children
(three to five years).
Brightly painted and with a soft finish and rounded edges, this is a great toy that will last, and which looks as good in the lounge as it does in the
playroom. It understandable that plastic toys are useful, easy to maintain and easy to wash, but you can't beat a nice bit of wood, especially if you're
buying a toy as a gift.
In practice
Our daughter (who is three) liked the way this stands on its own (like a very low coffee table) as it made her feel more independent. You can get
some nice table-top musical instruments, but the stand-alone aspect definitely won her over.
The wooden hammers are quite light and easy to hold (they have rounded handles) so she didn't get bored trying to handle them whilst making her
sweet music. And the variety of sounds (tinkling, rat-a-tatting, clacking etc) kept her amused for much longer than her separate instruments do.
The sounds it makes are pretty good, not too tinny, so it should last until Eleanor is five, by which time she'll be demanding a Pearl EIx Cobalt
drumkit and Zildjian cymbals, no doubt.

It's no symphony orchestra, but the coloured wooden music table set-up makes this a nifty pre-school music centre.
